~ Multi Agency Police Department Training 1/4 & 1/5

Training

On 1/4 and 1/5 from approximately 8am-4pm the Mason Police Department will be hosting an Active Shooter Planning, Medical and Safety Techniques Training Course.  All of Mason’s officers will be in attendance as well as some officers from surrounding towns and this region. Several of the surrounding agencies may likely come to the training in their department police vehicles and will be parked in the church parking lot during the two days.

We have extended this training to outside agencies for two reasons; 1) there is no offering of this type of training in the region, and 2) being a small community we rely on officers responding from the region, we want to ensure responding officers are familiar with the town of Mason and have worked with us before.

On day 1 the training will take place inside the Congregational Church and will involve medical training and techniques for safely entering and clearing buildings.  On day 2, officers and instructors in small groups, will walk or drive their vehicles from the church over to the police department parking lot and meet behind the department.  Scenarios will begin behind the police department and move into the police department from the rear entrance to conduct further scenarios.

Part of the scenarios will involve a role player firing “live blanks” from inside the police department or very close to the rear of the police department before moving inside.  It is doubtful that these blanks will be heard from inside the school, but it is always possible.  We have also taken extra consideration to communicate with the Mason Elementary School of the two-day training and of the officers walking and/or driving to the police department on day 2 to minimize activity directly outside of the school property.

As your Chief of Police, I will always do everything I can reasonably do to keep Mason as safe as we can which includes training for the worst-case scenario. This type of training is one element of safety planning focusing on staff preparedness.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly for any questions/concerns.
